Data Progress Tools: READING
Tracking Sight Words
I love the idea from this bog! Not only will graphing the number of sight words they know show your students their progress, but it also introduces and gets them familiar with graphing.
Letter Recognition and Sounds
I really like how this example has everything in one place! For students' letter recognition and sounds (bottom left corner) I think teachers could use a different color marker each time the student was tested to give a nice visualization of how much they grew each time. I also love the page on the right where there is room for a goal each time. Again, I like the idea of students being able to see their own growth as they check off goals they've met. This sheet also has an area called 'All About Me' where teachers can write little things they've learned about the students that might help inform others who test that same student.
Vocabulary Tracking Sheet
Teachers could also use a vocabulary tracking sheet like the one above that focuses on spelling words or power words from the IRLA (if the school is an Action 100 school). Again, using a different color each time the student is tested is a great way to show growth! I think that this is also something students could keep track of using a graph.
Tracking Reading Levels
What a great motivational tool! Have students track their reading levels by graphing them each quarter (or every month). Even when they feel like they're not getting anywhere, they can see the proof that they're growing.
Weekly Book Response
I think it would be wonderful to have students write a response of one of their favorite books each or every other week. Teachers could save them all and put them in a separate section of their data folder. Flipping through them would not only show students' progression in their comprehension skills, but writing skills as well.
