Class Mission Statement:
This example shows a teacher who took her first grade student's exact wishes for the year and turned them into a mission statement.
This teacher took ideas from her entire class and then consolidated them into seven statements. Each student then signed the final draft as a promise to do their best each day.
I love this! Simple "We will" phrases and self portraits by all the students.
For use in an upper grade classroom: This blog post shows the three step process a teacher used to create a class mission statement. 1. Why are we here? 2. What do we need to do well together? 3. How do we make that happen? These guidelines would also work well when establishing classroom rules.
This is an excellent idea to make sure each student's voice is heard when writing your class mission statement. Have each student answer a few questions on post-it notes. The teacher can go through and and consolidate similar ideas before presenting them to the class. This example came from a blog by a 4th grade teacher.
